About the Position
Since 1948, we’ve been handcrafting ceramic tableware that is both beautiful to look at and satisfying to hold. Households, museums, and designers worldwide admire our limited-production cups, plates, bowls, and serving pieces, for their simple, timeless beauty and functional everyday use.
The Kiln Generalist is responsible for wiping product, unloading and loading the kilns.
Essential Role Functions
_ Wiping all regular pieces using the wiping machine
_ Wiping plaza pieces
_ Communicating with the glazers about which items should be wiped and where
_ Wiping all shapes to Heath quality control standards in accordance with daily production needs
_ Unloading (stripping) the kiln
_ Understanding which fired glaze colors need to be protected with paper to prevent scratching
_ Placing fired product onto carts and taking them to the quality control area
_ Shelf maintenance: identifying and correcting quality control issues with the kiln shelves
_ Loading the kiln
_ Learning how to load the kiln under the direction of the Firing Lead:
_ Recognizing unfired glaze product: clay body and glaze color
_ Understanding how to handle the product, depending on glaze, shape, size, and placement within the kiln
_ Understanding where products can and cannot be placed in the kiln before firing; i.e. baffled vs unbaffled
_ Learning which pieces are loaded to which areas of the kiln, according to glaze, shape, size, and heat distribution in the kiln itself
_ Independent loading of the kiln and placement of ware within the kiln in order to meet yield goals and quality control standards
_ Ability to start kilns, perform turn ups, and fire kilns as necessary
_ Desire to work in a plant environment and to be “hands on”
_ Great people skills: must be patient, flexible, and calm
_ Excellent communication skills
_ Excellent attention to detail
_ Ability to enhance a team
_ Ability to follow strict safety guidelines
_ Ability to follow instructions accurately and in a timely manner
Physical Requirements (medium to heavy)
_ Ability to lift up to 25 lbs, supporting a target of loading five glost kilns per day
_ Pulling and pushing carts
_ Standing for 90% of the day
_ Other activities, including climbing, balancing, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, repetitive motion, grasping, and feeling.
Visual Acuity Requirements (including color, depth perception, and field vision)
The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform activities such as: preparing and inspecting materials; visual inspection involving small defects, small objects, and/or operation of machines (including inspection); using measurement devices; and visual checks of materials and machinery. The worker will also need visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned.
An ideal candidate has very good attention to detail, works efficiently and is always mindful of quality. MUST follow safety procedures. Must have a positive attitude and foster a team environment. MUST be willing to learn from experienced personnel during a thorough training period. Good communication skills are required.

5am-1:30pm, Tuesday-Friday, Flexibility of working from 9:30a-6p Saturday or at a time agreed upon by the Dinnerware Production Manager
Overtime may be required.
