Role Summary

The Second Shift Raw Materials Generalist is responsible for making clay filter cakes, casting slip, glazes, tile clay, dinnerware clay, and molds per business needs.  Generalist will also be assigned wastewater, and kiln firing duties.


Essential Role Functions

Slip Making

_ Batching fresh manganese clay according to recipe requirements

_ Batching fresh white clay according to recipe requirements

_ Batching casting slip according to recipe requirements

_ Operating the vibratory screen to sieve the clay

_ Adjusting the rheological properties of the clay body

_ Operating the filter presses

_ Operating the dust collection system

_ Pressure washing the slipmaking area daily

_ Operating displacement pumps to transfer materials

_ Making filter cakes using the filter presses

_ Making casting slip using the slip blungers

_ Batching fresh clay using the mixing blungers

_ Maintaining the proportions between fresh and reclaimed clay

_ Mix, screen, and press dinnerware clay, both white and manganese bodies, based on production needs

_ Batch casting slips, supply slip caster with slip, and recycle casting scrap

_ Adjust and balance casting slip using viscometer and specific gravity cup

_ Collecting scrap clay from around the plant for recycling


Clay Making

Level I

_ Operating the Heath forklift safely

_ Maintaining cleanliness standards in the claymaking area

_ Preparing and labeling material bins for transfer

_ Maintaining production records

_ Understanding how the pug mills operate and assisting with their operation

Level II

_ Extruding tile and dinnerware clay using the pug mills

_ Operating the pug mills safely

_ Checking the clay quality frequently for hardness, air, and delamination

_ Following clay orders for dinnerware production

_ Backing up and assisting tile clay making

_ Maintaining a safe and clean claymaking area

_ Unloading or helping with clay deliveries and haul backs

_ Tooling set up on pug mill

_ Preparing tables of clay for tile and dinnerware production


Kiln Firing

_ Gas Kiln Firing

_ Lighting the kilns

_ Turning up the burners on a determined schedule

_ Balancing the firing in the end so the kiln is uniformly fired

_ Documenting the firing process

_ Taking accurate instrument readings

_ Measuring and recording the results of the firing

_ Maintaining the burners on a daily basis

_Carefully monitoring the product in the bisque kiln and correcting any quality control issues

_ Electric Kiln Firing

_ Turning the three electric kilns on and off on a set schedule as needed

_ Loading and unloading the kilns

_ Counting the pieces as part of the unloading process

_ Recording the count and providing to the Dinnerware Production Planner

_ Collaborating with dinnerware production management and other concerned parties regarding the results of each kiln firing

_ Supports annual kiln maintenance for all kiln components

_ Supports technical adjustments to the kilns, i.e. measuring and adjusting the dampers


Mold Making

Level 1

_ Knowledge of SKUs for all jiggered pieces

_ Preparing cases and case backs including ultracal, urethane, and aluminum surfaces for pouring

_ Batching, mixing, and pouring plaster using the scale, mixer, vacuum pump, hoist, and mix pots

_ Knocking out, trimming and dating molds

_ Overseeing the circulation of the molds through the drying process

_ Exercise extreme caution with fragile, unique, expensive and in some cases historical tooling

_ Maintaining work area to end of day standards

_ Respirator certification (online course) and ability to operate wearing one

_ Familiar with best practices around using compressed air

Level 2

_ Knowledge of SKUs for all slip cast pieces

_ Maintaining plaster inventory/age

_ Assembling and preparing slip cast cases and rails for pouring

_ Pouring/knocking out/trimming and dating slip cast molds


Glaze Making

Level I

_ Storage area for materials

_ Transferring glaze materials properly

_ Identifying bags of materials and properly placing in correct containers

_ Identifying slight differences in materials according to size, feel, texture, and behavior

_ Learning the basic glaze formulas, materials, and the order in which they are added to the glaze recipes

_ Batching the glaze according to specific recipes

_ Measuring viscosity and specific gravity using the correct equipment

_ Adjusting basic rheological properties including viscosity and specific gravity

_ Understanding screen selection (60 mesh, 80 mesh, or 120 mesh) for base glazes

_ Preparing and firing test samples for glaze batches

_ Comparing fired test samples against the standard glaze: color matching, texture, opacity/translucency, contaminates and reporting results to the senior Glazemaker

_ Maintaining glaze storage area at a high standard of safety and cleanliness

_ Basic understanding of the firing and quality control processes

_ Preparing glazes to specification for dinnerware and tile production

_ Coordinating with key dinnerware production employees to maintain optimal quantities of prepared glazes

_ Keeping glaze making station clean and organized

_ Basic understanding of  Heath quality control standards

_ Follow production glaze lists and record all production accurately


Physical Requirements (heavy)

_ Ability to lift 20- 50 lbs approximately 200 times per day

_ Standing for 90% of the day

_ Other activities, including climbing, balancing, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, repetitive motion, grasping, and feeling.


Visual Acuity Requirements (including color, depth perception, and field vision)

The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform activities such as: preparing and inspecting materials; visual inspection involving small defects, small objects, and/or operation of machines (including inspection); using measurement devices; and visual checks of materials and machinery. The worker will also need visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned and to operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment.



An ideal candidate has very good attention to detail, works efficiently and is always mindful of quality. MUST follow safety procedures. Must have a positive attitude and foster a team environment. MUST be willing to learn from  experienced personnel during a thorough training period. Good communication skills are required.
