What we are looking for
Heath's designs, new and old, are known for their bauhaus roots - driven by their materials and simplicity in form. Today these roots inspire us not only in our design of new products, but in everything we design, from our retail environments to our product catalogs and signage for our customers. This is an exciting opportunity for a design manager who wishes be an integral part of Heath's small design team and assist the Creative Director in executing Heath’s vision.

This role focuses on the management and development of a variety of design-related projects and people, including product, packaging, retail, events and new ventures, while developing and promoting a Design-focused approach every step of the way. Heath is a unique company that leads by design, does it's own manufacturing and sells it's own products in its own showrooms. Thus creating a broad and holistic design challenge where we create and control product design, materials, manufacturing, and the narrative environment in which our products are presented. This position is ultimately responsible for guiding the team and setting priorities to meet Heath’s vision. Heath’s Design Manager will work with Heath’s Creative Director, and Heath’s Clay Studio Director while carrying out and helping to develop Heath's design organization and processes.
The ability to coordinate and collaborate with other people in the company at multiple staff levels, and leading when needed, is extremely important.
Design Management and Design
_ Unify the efforts of Heath's Creative Team by overseeing and prioritizing projects, managing resources, creating roadmaps, and communicating needs throughout the process.
_ Collaborate with Design Team and other key partners to uncover research opportunities, conceptualize and define goals+design intent.
_ Present solutions and proposals, with independent decision making where appropriate.
_ Manage or lead the design development lifecycle per project goals and design intent, including: research, concept development, technical specs, and transition to fabrication, manufacturing and implementation.
Design Strategy (Develop and promote a Design-focused culture across the organization)
_ Lead, oversee, and define best practices for organizing and creating processes within the company that help carry out and explore Heath's design vision in a holistic way
_ Identify opportunities to create value and improve the design experience; organize and exploit opportunities to create compelling design-focused experiences for both employees and customers.
_ Work with the creative director to promote and integrate a high level of design into diverse areas of the company, empower others to do the same.
_ Work in a hands-on way to develop an understanding of Heath’s clay materials and processes, as well as new processes, materials and categories that may be worth exploring the future.
_ Create a positive, productive, and creative environment for coworkers and collaborators.
_ Manage and develop Heath's Creative Team, which includes Product Design and Communications, and parts of Graphic Design and Product Development. Responsible for assessing resources and hiring.
_ Drive the development of the design team; identify opportunities to build expertise, anticipate future opportunities, ensure a balance of creative and tactical/technical needs, and develop talent bench.
_ Degree in product design or industrial design.
_ 7-10 years of relevant experience as an industrial or product designer with project and staff management experience.
_ Literacy in all the Adobe series.
_ Understanding of a broad range of manufacturing techniques
_ Expert project management skills, use of project management tools for design management
_ Ability to work in Sausalito (public transportation is challenging here) and San Francisco
_ Must have an inherent understanding of design and aesthetics
_ Effective liaison across multiple staff levels, comfortable in a factory environment
_ Resourceful, able and eager to take on unfamiliar tasks and challenges
_ Clear communicator with a service approach and diplomatic style. Excellent written and verbal skills.
_ Good sense of design and presentation throughout all activities
_ Super organized – able to create process and tools and follow up
_ Meticulous attention to detail
_ Capable problem solver with a solution-oriented outlook towards every situation, be it on a design project or if your office chair breaks
_ Great time manager - able to prioritize and multi–task
_ Must be flexible for occasional overtime
_ Elements of the job are in a factory environment and may require prolonged periods of standing and lots of walking.
